Another pumpkin post today because we love pumpkin! Interesting info about pumpkins you may not know... Pumpkin plants have male & female flowers, each opening early in the morning. The male flowers show a couple if weeks before the female flowers. The bees do all the work of pollinating, taking pollen from the male flowers to the female flowers. They make light work of it. In the main patch this morning, we're working on one of the pumpkin beds. This year we have a few extra 'trial' vegetable beds; space is scarce. So... we are training the pumpkins in this bed to run up the wire, as well as along the ground. It's the last bed before the fence so the pumpkin vines can take up all that space. The scarlet runner beans have loved the rain and the warmer weather. We love growing scarlet runner beans! They are prolific growers and provide a cool space in the garden. You can eat them as fresh beans or dry the beans out and save them as a delicious treat in cooler weather. This strip of scarlet runners will keep the lettuce bed in a little bit of shade over summer. Today we are going to play where's Frankie... He's here somewhere??? While we wait for him to surface, we'll move the hay around the paddock so that what they waste will spread & mulch the soil. You will see in the background there is very little grass left in the paddocks. The average autumn rainfall for our area is around 150ml. We had 32ml. Then we move into winter, our driest months, with an average rainfall of 120ml. We've received to date 21ml. The paddocks are bare, the dams are low, & the local wildlife are struggling. We are now solely feeding our cows hay. We're a small farm & meticulous with our water. We imagine the bigger farms are suffering too. Come on Canberra & Queanbeyan let's start a rain dance for our region! Let the rain dance be so powerful that we whip away the burden of drought for our region & we raise rain that will fill our dams and soil with the water that will quench its thirst. Let the rain come at a pace that gives the land time to drink it up with stores for our warmer months. We are ready for you rain. It's another record cold morning here on the farm. We hit -9 overnight. These mornings require careful consideration when preparing for the day. How do the cold mornings impact our day? Well, we are glad you asked. There's alot of strategically planned unveiling of plants, so that the sun slowly works its magic of defrosting plant cell walls. The chickens water will need the ice cracked so they have access to water. The water pipes around the farm will be frozen, we'll need to monitor for leaks and cracks. The animals will need more food to restore their energy levels so they can maintain their body temperature. The farmers will need to monitor, add and remove layers of clothing as each task is started and completed.
